Deleting Snapchat? Back Up Your Memories First

Last updated October 2026 · Free · Works in any browser

If you're about to delete your Snapchat account, your Memories are the one thing you can't get back afterwards. They are not automatically saved to your phone, and once a deletion fully completes there is no recovery process. Back them up before you confirm deletion — here's how to do it properly.

What happens when you delete a Snapchat account

Deleting is a two-stage process. First the account is deactivated; if you log back in during the grace window (about 30 days), the account is restored. Once that window passes, Snapchat proceeds with permanent deletion — after that point, your Memories are unrecoverable, by you and by Snapchat.

That makes the backup step non-negotiable: whatever you don't save now stops existing when the window closes.

Step 1 — Request your Memories from Snapchat

Sign in at accounts.snapchat.com, open My Data, and submit a request with the Memories export enabled. Snapchat emails you a download link when the archive is ready — large accounts can take a while, so start this well before you want the account gone. The full walkthrough, including troubleshooting, is in how to export Snapchat Memories.

Step 2 — Turn the export into keepable files

The archive Snapchat sends is a metadata-heavy ZIP, not an album — raw files come out with machine names and no capture dates, and longer videos are split into MP4 parts. Snapkeep converts it in your browser (nothing is uploaded) into dated, year-sorted photos and videos with the capture dates written into the files themselves, so they land correctly in Google Photos or Apple Photos.

Step 3 — Check the backup before you delete

Don't rely on a single ZIP. Hard drives die and phones fall in lakes. Two copies in two different places is the minimum for the only version of these photos that will exist after deletion.

Step 4 — Delete the account

Once your backup checks out, go to Snapchat's account portal at accounts.snapchat.com, choose Delete My Account, sign in, and confirm. That starts the deactivation window described above.

After deletion

During the window you can still change your mind by logging back in. After it closes, deletion is permanent — and the export you converted and verified becomes the only copy of your Memories anywhere. That's the whole point of doing this in order: backup first, delete second.

Questions people ask

Can Snapchat recover Memories after deletion?

Once the deactivation window closes and deletion completes, no — not by you, and not by contacting support. What wasn't backed up is gone.

Doesn't Snapchat already save Memories to my camera roll?

Only if you turned on auto-save in Memories settings — most people never did. The data export covers your Memories either way, so it's the reliable route.

Can I export only some of my Memories?

Snapchat's export request is all-or-nothing. But once you've converted the archive, the files are ordinary photos and videos — keep what you want and delete the rest.
